Recovering a corrupted ipe file

Hi Ipe users,

I have been working on an ipe document which suddenly cannot be opened any more. Ipe shows an error message that "The document was created by a newer version of Ipe". I am certain that this is not true, and that the file was corrupted in some other way. The file is still a valid pdf. Is there anything I might try to recover this file and one hour of work?

Kind regards,
Chris

The first step should always be to run ipeextract on the PDF file to
convert it to a plain-text XML file. Then look at the first lines -
what version of Ipe does it show?

Hi Ipe users,

I have exactly the same problem. I created two files with Ipe on another
computer and now when I try to open them with Ipe 7.1.4, I get the message
"The document was created by a newer version of Ipe".
I tried to run ipeextract but I get the message "Error parsing PDF file
Error during extraction of XML stream."

Any suggestions ?
Thanks a lot !

You have seen this message, right?

http://lists.science.uu.nl/pipermail/ipe-announce/2013-November/000055.html

Open your file in a PDF viewer and check the "Document properties". If
it doesn't state Ipe as both the Producer and Creator of the document,
then the file has been tampered with and no longer contains Ipe markup.

In that case, you need to look for an older version that has not yet
been tampered with. Also look for autosave files (Ipe -> Help -> Show
configuration will tell you where autosave files are stored). Ipe never
deletes autosave files, so you may be lucky and find a recent version of
your document).

If both producer and creator of your file are "Ipe" but Ipe still cannot
open the file, then there is a bug. Open a bug report and attach the
file (or email it to me).

Cheers,
Otfried
